In Nazran an explosion went off near the House of Culture at 19:10 hours. A “VAZ-21099” automobile parked in the House of Culture car park blew up. As a result of the explosion a neighbouring “Zhiguli” car caught fire. Three employees of Nazran’s Municipal Department for Internal Affairs died at the site of the blast, the fourth died from his injuries in hospital. The explosion was massive, heard by residents across almost the whole of Nazran. In the Ministry of Internal Affairs they emphasise, “We consider at present the primary lead for what occurred to be a terrorism act.” “The information gathered by the field-investigation group indicates that the ‘VAZ-21099’ automobile was packed with an explosive device equivalent to 2 kg of TNT. At the moment when the VAZ automobile drove up, the explosion of the ‘VAZ-21099’ was executed,” said a representative for the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Republic of Ingushetiya. The State Prosecutor for the Republic of Ingushetiya has opened a criminal investigation under two sections – 317 (attempt on the life of employees of the law enforcement agencies) and 222 (unlawful carrying and storage of weapons and explosive materials).

The population of Ingushetiya is outraged at the shooting of a teacher’s family in Karabulak. As previously with the murder of the Terekhin family in the Cossack village of Ordzhonikidzevskaya, many believe the present crime is a set-up by certain forces intent on increasing the military presence in the republic and turning Ingushetiya into a war zone to solve the problems faced on the eve of elections. The residents of Karabulaka, Nazran, Ordzhonikidzevskay and other populated areas of the republic are vigorously discussing the case, intent on publicly condemning the crimes. Certain groups have gone to Nazran to appear on television and condemn the killing of the 17-year-old youth in Nazran and shooting of a teacher’s family in Karabulak. However, the leadership of the television station had agreed to restrict on-air discussion to the murder of the teacher’s family, citing instructions received from Zyazikov.

“A young lad was walking down the road – he was listening to music, earphones in his ears. First they jumped out of a car with no number plates, wearing track suits and masks, without any warning they shot the guy with a Stechkin [a special services issue handgun]. Afterwards men in helmets jumped out of a car, emptied a whole round from a submachine gun into the guy lying on the ground, kicked him like a dog, after that they got a gun, a magazine and booklet and put it next to him, and then filmed this scene on camera. There was a huge number of people there, and they saw all this. One guy who tried to film this BEDLAM on his mobile telephone had his phone snatched and smashed on the ground, they shot overhead and threatened [the crowd] with their submachine guns. An hour later our cops drove up and took away the body. The lad was sixteen years old, if he’d been guilty of something, they could have just arrested him and tried him by law. Recently they showed a maniac who had killed dozens people, they tried him, and didn’t just kill him like a dog, but this sixteen-year-old lad [they killed] without a trial, an investigation. I am sure that he wasn’t guilty of anything, probably just blabbed too much. When I read about stuff like this here on the site [Ingushetiya.Ru], I never quite believed it, but now… I have no more illusions about this country.”
